The internal stimulus in the male consists of the presence of the accumulated seminal secretions and the activity of hormones throughout the body, of which the latter is not yet very well understood. This internal stimulus gradually develops in intensity until puberty (around the age of fourteen), when it is distinctly noticeable, appearing in consciousness at times as a vague restlessness. The internal stimulus in the female consists of certain bodily conditions produced by the activity of the ovaries, which again is not clearly understood, but this stimulus, as in the male, may be recognized at puberty at least by the symptom of a peculiar restlessness. The internal stimulus is a general stimulus, that is, it is about the same for everyone within a given sex, with of course some variations in intensity among individuals. It is general in a qualitative sense, in that it does not register in consciousness in a highly specific form that differs from one person to another. It is truly instinctive.
